Homemade Flour Tortillas will rock your world! These tortillas are soft and pliable and absolutely delicious. The key to making the tortillas soft is the amount of time kneading the dough. It might take some effort but the end result is will worth it.
Flour Tortillas
Ingredients
3 cups all purpose flour
1/3 cup vegetable shortening
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 cup hot water
Instructions
Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Add shortening and work it into the flour mixture using your fingers until it has a crumbly appearance. Pour in the hot water and again work the mixture with your hands until it forms a dough. Place dough onto a dry clean surface and begin to knead. This will take a minimum of 10 or until you can feel the dough become smooth and soft. Do not under knead or you will not have soft and pliable tortillas. Then roll dough into a long rope shape around 22 to 24 inches long. Cut dough into equal pieces, approximately 12 to 16 depending on how big you want your tortillas when rolled out. Cover the dough and allow to rest for 15 minutes. Then form the dough into balls by rolling them in the palms of your hands. Use a rolling pin to roll out each dough ball to the size you desire. Then place the rolled out tortilla into a hot dry skillet and cook a couple minutes on each side. Once cooked immediately place into an aluminum foil packet to keep from drying out. I fold one piece of aluminum foil in half lined with a damp paper towel which steams the tortillas to keep them soft and tender.
