Classic Lasagna
Homemade Sauce
1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
1/2 large onion, diced
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 tbsp dried basil
1 tbsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
28 oz. can crushed tomatoes
2 (15 oz.) cans tomato sauce
1 cup water
2 tbsp red wine (optional)
1 to 2 tbsp sugar
Cheese Filling
15 oz. container ricotta cheese
1 cup grated parmesan
1 cup shredded mozzarella
2 eggs
1 tbsp dried parsley
Additional cheese
4 cups shredded mozzarella
Instructions
To make the sauce: Brown ground beef in a large skillet with onions, garlic, and seasonings. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, red wine, water, and sugar. Cook for 30 minutes on low heat.
To make the cheese filling: combine all filling ingredients and mix thoroughly.
To assemble the lasagna: Spread 2 cups of sauce into the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish. Then add uncooked oven ready lasagna noodles. Spread cheese filling over the noodles, then enough sauce to cover the noodles and cheese, sprinkle with some mozzarella. Repeat layers, finishing with all of the sauce and sprinkle remaining mozzarella over top. Cover loosely with aluminum foil, making sure foil doesn't sit directly onto the cheese. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour, then remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until cheese is slightly browned. Allow lasagna to sit for 20 to 30 minutes before serving.
